Word 2010 and 2013: The words you type in the footer fit in pretty much the way words in the main body.  If you want a single line with some text on the left, some on the right, and some in the middle, you may have to reduce the font size to keep them from running onto another line, or decrease the spacing between left/center and center/right. 

Word 2016: The three sections inside the header/footer box will wrap the text for you. You can widen each section by simply holding the mouse over the dotted lines within the box and dragging that line left or right. Try sliding the dotted bar on the right a little to the left.
